Today we\u2019d like to introduce you to Shelley Herman.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don\u2019t you give us some details about you and your story.
As an abstract painter, I\u2019ve always been interested in color and form. I\u2019ve also been obsessed with jewelry since I was very young, and thought once I had more time, I\u2019d learn how to make it. After years of working seasonally in television production, I started making necklaces during my hiatus periods. I loved the process with the first piece, and started going to gem shows. I was immediately attracted to rough stones and unusual textures, and found that many of the stones I loved resembled the images in my color field paintings. From the beginning I decided I would make one-of-a-kind pieces, since I personally like to wear unique, statement jewelry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve expanded my designs to include Asian and North African silver antiques, so I search out new and exotic materials at every gem show I can get to. My work sells primarily in museum stores around the country, as well as in boutiques and at private trunk shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great, so let\u2019s dig a little deeper into the story \u2013 has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you\u2019ve had to overcome?
The economy has made it a bit of a rollercoaster, but never a struggle. I love the process so much and find it meditative, so no matter what else is happening, I have a creative life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alright \u2013 so let\u2019s talk business. Tell us about Shelley Herman Designs \u2013 what should we know?
I am the company. I choose the stones, then design and construct every piece of jewelry. My years as a visual artist have been very helpful in the design aspect, which comes easily to me. I rely on my own taste, and have become known for my exotic materials and unusual combinations of elements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A love of the materials, energy, and belief in my product. I also enjoy interacting with my clients.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
